Jeanette Sorensen '91

Our second $500 winner is Jeannette Magee Sorenson '91.  Jeanette is currently The Outreach Coordinator for College of Business Outreach Programs at the University of Las Vegas in Nevada.  Over her twelve year career in the field of academic advising, Jeanette has distinguished herself in student service.  Responsible for creating and building a student-centered centralized academic advising system, Jeanette reaches out not only to the local community and businesses, but also to first-generation and non-traditional college students seeking access to higher education, providing support throughout their academic career. "Serving the diverse needs of the UNLV student body requires someone who is well-versed in student development theory and practice, a good listener and problem solver, and one who is sensitive to the needs and concerns of both first-generation college students and adult learners," complimented her direct supervisor.

"I believe that my professional legacy will live on through these students who are now working to serve their community and the global society," Jeanette writes, "Much as the Bradford legacy guides me in my life.  ...In all honesty, my professional philosophy is soundly shaped by the many people at Bradford who served students with extreme dedication."  Her former professors would be proud to know that she has been distinguished with the UNLV Academic Advisor Award and received the inaugural Nevada System of Higher Education Regent's Academic Advisor Award. Jeanette is currently self-funding her Doctoral Degree, working part-time while she finishes research for her dissertation on building collaborative partnerships to enhance student learning.
